Pre-competition Nutrition

7 Tips for a Great Pre-Game Meal

  1. Don’t Experiment
Don’t try new foods on a game day, it might cause unexpected problems.
  2. Avoid Soft Drinks and Candy
Sugar is your enemy, empty calories that don’t provide long term fuel source.
  3. High Carbohydrates
Never can go wrong with breads, pasta, rice…pure long lasting energy source.
  4. Timing
Takes about 3 hours to empty the stomach of quality food.
  5. Fluids
Plenty of water and sports drinks…stay away from carbonated sugary soft drinks.
  6. Avoid High Fat Intake
Fat takes longer to digest and lots of water to process.
  7. Limit Protein Intake
Protein is a weak energy source, great for building tissue but limit the amount immediately prior to competition. Protein is great for recovery after competitions or workouts.

College Recruiting

From time to time I receive requests from colleges for information regarding athletes in their Junior and Senior years.  When I get them I will post the letter and contact information here.  You can reach out for more information from them or your coach..

Augsburg University

Hello Auggie T&F Recruits, Alumni and Family,
First let me say, It’s an honor to be named the Interim Head Men’s & Women’s Track & Field coach here at Augsburg University.  As a member of the staff the past two years, we‘ve been diligently working to become a competitive track & field program.  As the new head coach I plan to continue that work.  With the help of our coaching staff, I believe we have a great opportunity ahead of us and look forward to the future of Augsburg Track & Field.
In the past few weeks I’ve spent much time thinking about what we want for our program. Here are a few things I want to share with you at this time:
Vision:  My goal for our track & field program is to elevate our program to be competitive in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and eventually compete for conference championships.  I understand the intense effort this will take, but I’m confident our coaching staff is up to the task.  Most importantly, we want our student-athletes to make successful progress towards graduation.  Track & field is a great sport, but earning a college degree is and will always will be our #1 goal for our athletes.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion:  Our track & field program is one that celebrates diversity, equity & inclusion.  It is important to me personally that each member of our team feels respected and has the opportunity to become the best student-athlete they can be.  At Augsburg diversity is not just a word, it’s something we live by.  We will make every effort to support our student-athletes in their athletic, academic and personal pursuits.
Recruiting: One of our top priorities as a staff is the recruiting of talented athletes to our program.  We want to recruit athletes that compete for conference titles and eventually national championships!  These athletes will choose Augsburg because they not only want an amazing collegiate track & field experience, but they also desire the prestige that comes with obtaining a degree from our university.
Finally, let me again express my excitement to be the next head track & field coach at Augsburg University.  Our program will focus on excellence in everything we do as we continue to develop students to become successful individuals!
I look forward to connecting with each of you and please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.
Go Auggies!

UW - River Falls

Dear Coach,

I'd like to introduce myself as the new Head Coach at UW-River Falls.  I've been coaching D1 and professional athletes for the last 20 years, including Olympic Games, multiple World Championships, European and National Championships.  I don't say this to boast, but to let you know that your kids will receive the highest caliber of coaching here at UW-River Falls.  If you're curious, I've attached a list with examples of athletes I've personally coached across all event areas so you can see the type of development that happens.

I've received this great opportunity to return close to home and family and I'm looking to build UWRF into a National Championship program with your help.  Please send me contact information for your student-athletes that can help us achieve our goals and encourage them to give us a look.  I'm not just looking to have a taking relationship...let me know how I can serve you and your team.

Not only will I help your student-athletes achieve their genetic potential athletically, I will challenge them academically, I will mentor and mature them, and I will help them acquire a successful career.

Pasted below are the marks it takes to score at the NCAA Championship.  I'm not looking for athletes that can do this right now, but those diamonds in the rough, those that have the potential to meet and exceed these marks.  Will you help me out?  Will you put me on to your student-athletes that have passion and potential?

Thank you!

St Mary's U - Winona

Jake Malm here over at Saint Mary's University in Winona. Was wondering if I could connect with you on your current junior athletes? We're looking for our next crop of recruits (graduating class of 2022) and wanted to see if you felt any of your kids would be good for us to take a closer look at. Is there a best way to connect with you on this? I'm good with email text or call...whatever's easiest for you!

Thanks Coach!

Hamilton College

Coach Steffen,

How are you doing?  I hope that you have enjoyed a relatively normal and successful track season.  I am reaching out to see if you have any student-athletes that are interested in competing in track & field on the collegiate level.

Hamilton College completes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and NCAA DIII and has produced numerous National Champions, All-Americans and Conference Champions. Recent graduates include: Ty Kunzman '20 (All-American in Weight Throw), Catherine Berry '19 (NESCAC MVP and 4x NCAA Qualifier at 200/400m) and Lucas Wright '21 (NCAA Qualifier x3, NESCAC Champion 800m).

Hamilton ranks among the nations best schools in the US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT rankings, incorporates a need-blind admission policy and offers a unique Open Curriculum.  Our incoming students average a SAT of 1460 or ACT of 32 and most also fell in the top 20% of their high school class.

If you have any student-athletes you think would be a good fit, I'd appreciate it if you could complete our Coach Recommendation Form, pass along our Recruit Questionnaire or email/call me directly.

If you have any questions or would like to talk further, let me know, and I'd by happy to give you a call.

Thank you for your time and best of luck!
